IFA OF THE YEAR 2023/2024 FROM OKE-ITASE, ILE-IFE, STATE OF OSUN, NIGERIA

Eriwo Ya!!!

In the name of Olodumare, Orunmila and all other Orisa, we greet everybody throughout the globe. We also extend the greetings of His Eminence Owolabi Awodotun Aworeni, the Araba/Olu-Isese Agbaye (the Permanent Chairman of the Council of Araba/Oluwo, the Pillar of the International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR)) to you all in this season of the World Ifa Festival. With the combined efforts of Board of Ethics and Scripture and the Council of Elders of ICIR, we the members of Publication Committee of the Oke-Itase 2023/2024 Organising Committee set up by the International Council for Ifa Religion are hereby presenting verses of the Ifa of the year recited with inspiration by the priests on the mat in the early hours of Sunday, 4th June, 2023, which stands as the first day of the year in Ifa calendar system. The Odu Ifa that came out for this year is IROSUNOSA (IROSUN on the right, OSA on the left). The Odu came with Ire Aiku (Longevity) and to achieve this, ebo is recommended. Ifa Priests from Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Republic of Togo, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, United States of America, Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina, Panama, Britain, Switzerland, Ghana and Sweden made their contributions. The verses of Irosunosa recited with their narratives are below:

1. PROSPERITY

i.

On the issue of blessings, Ifa says there is need to make ebo and thereafter appease our ancestors in their burial ground. The items of ebo include a rooster, kola nuts, calabash, money and gin. After one has made the ebo, six kola nuts will be put inside the calabash and covered. The person will take the calabash and gin to the burial ground of his/her ancestor and pray and leave it there till the next day. The next day, he/she will open the calabash, pray and sacrifice the six kola nuts and gin to the ancestor(s). On this, Ifa says:

Akope eluju ni gbohun Olorun

A difa fun Mabomi

Omo afigba bowa mole

Lojo to n sunkun poun o nire gbogbo

O gbebo nibe o rubo

He complied

ii.

There will be a lot of blessings for us this year. To attain this, ebo is needed as well as appeasement of Ifa. The items of ebo include 2 rats, 2 fish, 2 hens, a goats and a pangolin. The pangolin will be used to appease Ifa with the goat. After the ebo and the appeasement, we need to be closer to Ifa. On this, Ifa says:

iii.

For people whose paths are being blocked by enemies, ebo is needed and there is need to appease the Iyami. Items of ebo include 4 pigeons, gin, palm oil, money and big rat. After the ebo, the big rat will be used for ipese for the Iyami.

iv.

There might be frustration from the rulers, leaders or the government but it will later turn good for the traditionalists. Leaders should not maltreat the subjects. Ifa says many people will be free of servitude this year. After freedom from bondage, people will become wealthy. We should always appease our Ori and Ifa every week. Ifa says we should also use edible things to appease our Egbe. The story is about Origbemika who was serving Olusin. Origbemika used to appease Ori for Olusin. After appeasing Ori for Olusin, Olugbemika would also appease Ori for himself and pray that his Ori should take him to a better place in case there was any. People heard him and reported to Olusin. Olusin was angry and said there could never be any better place than his palace for Origbemika. He made a coffin and put Origbemika inside. He threw the coffin inside a flowing river. The river carried the coffin to a town where they were looking for a stranger to enthrone as king. They saw the strange item, opened it and were surprised to find a man inside. He was then installed as the king. Funny enough, this town where Origbemika was enthroned was superior to the town ruled by Olusin. After the coronation of Origbemika as the king, all the vassal towns under him came to pay homage with tributes, Olusin included. Origbemika could not be recognized by Olusin because, the face of the former was covered with the beads of the crown. He asked Olusin about his subject, Origbemika and Olusin said, people reported him and he has thrown him in a river. It was then that Origbemika removed the beads and Olusin was surprised to see the king. On this, Ifa says:

Gbadiye sin

Mi o rowo osin

A difa fun Origbemika

In such condition we meet people who follow Orunmila

v.

Good character is needed to receive blessings. Appeasement of Ori is very important this year. People should not go out or go to the market any time they appease their Ori this year and vice versa. Individuals should take note of the days of the most popular market in their respective towns, and they should not appease their Ori on the day. The story is about Orunmila and others who wanted to choose destiny and character. It is said that the same day and time when one can choose destiny at Ido coincided with the day and time for choosing character at Ejigbomekun market. If one chose destiny at Ido, he/she could not meet up to choose character that very day and vice versa. Therefore, it was advisable to do one and postpone the other to the following year because, it was once in a year. Orunmila chose Ori, destiny at Ido and did not bother to go to the market for character. Those who attempted to do the two together lost both. Then, the following year, Orunmila went to choose character at the market while others then were able to achieve just one and there was no opportunity again for them again. Therefore, Orunmila was the only person who chose both Ori, Destiny and Iwa, Character. On this, Ifa says:

Ekuro orita ni o senu sonso soloko

A difa fun Orunmila

To n lo ree yan ori lode Ido

On lo ree yan iwa loja Ejigbomekun

It is only Ela (Orunmila) who has character

Many people who have good destiny, they do not have good character

It is only Ela (Orunmila) who has character

vi.

Ifa sees all fortunes for us. We should always utter positive statements and pray for good things for ourselves and others. Ifa says whatever the priests say will always come to pass. Therefore, there should not be negative utterances. Ebo must be made with 4 pigeons, honey, gin, kola nuts, rats, fish, hen and money. On this, Ifa says:

Pasan waara o

vii.

Ifa says ebo is needed for great achievements. Ebo is needed with, 2 cocks, 2 hens, 2 snails, hook, blade, ewe emu, cotton thread, palm oil, solid corn meal and money, after the ebo, Ifa will be appeased with a hen and a snail while Ori will be appeased with a snail and cock. On this, Ifa says:

Also, for business men/women, farmers and other people who engage in one business or the other, to profit and be blessed, ebo is needed. 6. ORISA WORSHIP

i.

The other name of this odu is Irosunonisin (Irosun who reiterates significance of worship). This odu appears to remind us of the need to take worship of Orisa more serious. Ifa is telling us that people have derailed from the path of Olodumare. Devotees are not doing the right thing concerning worshipping. In particular, Ifa is emphasizing fifth day (weekly) worship (Ose Oroorun) of our respective Orisa. For example, the worship on Ojo Awo should be taken serious by devotees of Orunmila, Osun, Olokun, Osanyin, Ela and Yemoja; Ojo Ogun by devotees of Ogun, Ija, Orisa-Oko, Erinle and Osoosi; Ojo Jakuta by devotees of Sango, Oya, Bayanni, Obaluaye, Bukuu and Aganju while Ojo Obatala should be taken serious by devotees of Yemoo, egungun, Obatala, Egbe, Oro and Orisa Oke. However, for convenience, to allow proper inclusive participation of our people, weekend worship in temples should be taken serious as well. We should note that the worship in temples every Saturday or Sunday combines worshipping more than one Orisa at a period; it gives room to worshiping by devotees of many Orisa at a time at the same venue. Ifa says we should establish more shrines and temples across our land. Every devotee should appease his/her Orisa with favourite food of the Orisa. On this, Ifa says:

Orunmila wi isin

ii.

Ifa says people should try to get initiated to Ifa to attain greatness; People who are initiated to Ifa will be great. Ifa says initiated people should not be temperamental. They should always try to control their temperament. Most importantly, people should not react angrily to their Oluwo, Ojugbona, Iyanifa, teachers or leaders.   Every beneficiary of material thing or spiritual deed should never pay back the benefactors with evil but appreciation always. People should try to appreciate their Oluwo, Ojugbona, Iyanifa, teachers and leaders either in kind or in cash. To be great, Ebo should be made with 2 rats, 2 fish, 2 hens, kola nuts, palm oil, bitter kola, a goat and a ram. After the ebo, Ifa will be appeased with rat, fish, hen and goat while Sango will be appeased with a ram. On this, Ifa says:

Ifa says many people will revert back to Isese, the Yoruba Traditional Religion/Spirituality this year. Many conspiracies against Oodua tradition will be exposed and lies demystified. Irosunosa says Isese will witness influx of great people. However, the leaders and all people promoting the ways of Orisa should make ebo after which akose will be prepared for them with ewe esisi (esisi leaves), akosin rat and head of osin bird. On this, Ifa says:

For him not to have followers

7. MARITAL ISSUES

i.

People should not consider divorce this year. Couples should try to mend their broken relationships and friends should not fight or allow any kind of break up. Ifa says if divorce, fight or break up should occur, both parties will suffer the adverse effects. Friends or couples should treat each other well and not look down on each other. Ifa says people will lose their honour when they divorce or break up relationships. This is the story of Sango and his wife known as Seere (the rattle gourd). Wherever Sango is going, Seere would be in front and people would know that a prestigious person is coming. The honour would be great. They fought then and divorced against the advice from Ifa. Then, Sango was going to the functions alone. Whenever Sango was coming, nobody would know that any man of honour was coming. This is because, besides the sound of Bata drum, the sound of Seere announces the presence of Sango and adds great honour. The honour given to Sango reduced and Seere also became useless as she could not go to any function by herself. They both suffered and later decided to mend their broken relationship. They came back together and their honour returned. Generally, couples or friends should try to mend their broken relationships so that both parties will not suffer. On this, Ifa says:

Irosun saara gaga

ii.

Ifa says people should not befriend enemies of their friends; a woman should not make friends with enemy of her husband and vice versa. Ogun should be appeased in the blacksmith workshop to demystify plot of the conspirators. This is the story of Ogun whose enemies wanted to know the food he ate in the morning and at night. They paid Ewiri, the wife to tell them what the husband liked to eat in order to poison him. Funny enough, she did not know what her husband ate. She decided to find out for her new friends, who are the enemies of her husband. One day, Ogun was inside the workshop and Ewiri tiptoed to the place and hid under the stool of Ogun to see whenever he wanted to eat. As she hid under the stool, Ogun did not know and was ready to eat. Ogun started eating live coal. Ewiri was surprised and when she could not hold it again, she exclaimed. Ogun saw her and asked her what her mission was there. With fear, she confessed and in anger, Ogun held her head and forced her to eat live coal which burnt her mouth. On this, Ifa says:

Irosun sa n oo ro

Irosun o sa n oo ro

A difa fun Ewiri ti sobirin Ogun

O loun fe mo oun togun n je sun

She said she wanted to know what Ogun took as dinner

She said she wanted to know what Ogun took as breakfast

All those who always follow the instructions of Ifa

Come and meet us in victory

In such situation we meet people at the feet of Obarisa

iii.

Infidelity of any nature should be refrained from. Social vices like adultery and fornication should be refrained from in order to avoid untimely death.  Also, women should not divorce so that they will not become unmarried for long. Ifa says women who are Apetebi should be very careful.  This verse tells the story of Olosun, who divorced Agbonniregun. Then, she was left unmarried because, every man was afraid of moving close to him. On this, Ifa says:

Kukute kukuruku awo eba ona

A difa fun Olosun ti saya Agbonniregun

Eni to ri Olosun ti ko sa

Ile! Ile loko re fi ke o! Ile!

Kukute kukuruku awo eba ona

Cast Ifa for Olosun, who was a wife of Agbonniregun

Whoever sees Olosun and do not stay aloof

8. GENDER ISSUE

i.

Ifa says women should be ready to take their rightful position. Women should summon courage to lead in every aspect be it socio-cultural, educational, economic or political. Ifa says women are in the position to take the land to greater height. Women should make their voices loud. Ifa says women should not be relegated. We must promote our wives and daughters and give them leadership position. Ebo should be made and Orisa Oya appeased. The items of ebo include 2 hens or a goat. After the ebo, Oya will be appeased with a hen or a goat. On this, Ifa says:

Irosun saara gagaga

O doju de pipipi

A difa fun Oya opaka

Eleyi ti oo roro ti oo si ju sango

Ebo ni won ni ko se

O si gbebo nibe o rubo

She was told to make ebo

She complied

It is Oya Opaka that is fiercer, and more popular than Sango

When a woman is fierce, she gets more popular than the husband

ii.

Ifa says men should be responsible, otherwise, they will suffer the repercussion of irresponsibility and become servants of their wives. People who are in the position of authority should be responsible for them not to incur the wrath of Olodumare and become wretched. On this, Ifa says:

Oku pe onilu ma jo

A difa fun Ikoko

See the consequence of refusal to make ebo

9. AUTHORITY OF THE RULERS

i.

Ifa says the leaders of Orisa community of each town should not fight with the king and the latter should not look down on the former. They should maintain mutual relationship for the betterment of the land. On this, Ifa says:

Irosun saara gaga

O sare geere ni popo onipopo

A difa fun Kaabiyesi

O bu owo kan fun Araba

Lojo won jo n sota

Ebo ni won ni ki won se

Ogboogba la n pinwa eni

Cast Ifa for Araba as well

When they were fighting

They were advised to make ebo

Things must be shared equally

Oba has crown on his head

Araba has his neck decorated with beads

Things must be shared equally

ii.

The subjects should not disrespect the people in the position of authority. Also, the rulers/kings in Oodua land need to make ebo and appease Obatala so that their authority will not be challenged by subjects and whoever challenged their authorities will have himself/herself blamed. Ebo must be made with a he-goat, gin, corn meal, palm oil and a lot of snails. After the ebo, obatala will be appeased with snails. On this, Ifa says:

Irosun saara gagaga

Ominu n ko eleye

A difa fun Orisanla Oseeremagbo

Ase enu oun o le ku lo n dafa si

Won ni ko kara nile ebo ni ko se

O si gbebo nibe o rubo

Cast Ifa for Orisanla Oseeremagbo

How he would not lose his authority is the reason behind the consultation

He was told to make ebo

He complied

Orisanla, I hail you

One with authority! The Orisa with power!

iii.

Irosunosa says people should not conspire against the rulers and leaders. The kings in Oodua land and other Yoruba global towns, should make ebo for popularity. They need to make ebo with 3 he-goats, 3 big rats, corn meal, palm oil and money. After the ebo, the big rats will be used as ipese for the Iyami and one of the he-goats will be used to appease Esu. On this, Ifa says:

Olunlade awo ni

Olunlosin awo ni

A difa fun Oba Ajalaye

Without delay! Esu Odara will surely bring them. Without delay!

Powerful men of the land said they would not submit to the authority of the king

Without delay! Esu Odara will surely bring them. Without delay!

Powerful woman of the land said they would not submit to the authority of the king

Without delay! Esu Odara will surely bring them. Without delay!

iv.

Ifa says people are back biting the kings. People are saying bad things about them. Though the kings are doing some bad things, people are even misconstruing the good they are doing. There is need for the kings to make ebo with a he-goat, a ram, camwood, local chalk, kola nuts, bitter kola, palm oil, gin and money. After the ebo, Esu will be appeased with kola nut and the he-goat while Sango will be appeased with bitter kola and ram. The story is about Mofoyewa who was a king. People said he was doing bad and they started singing around to ridicule him. He then went for divination and was told to make ebo. After the ebo, people started singing his praise. On this, Ifa says:

Olosun saara gaga

A difa fun Mofoyewa, ti won oo mu joye laafin

Mofoyewa, Oba wa

Igba won fi o joye, o baye je

Mofoyewa, Oba wa

Igba won fi o joye, nile aye gun

Olosun saara gaga

Cast Ifa for Mofoyewa, who would be installed as king in the palace

IFA OF THE YEAR 2021/2022 FROM OKE-ITASE, ILE-IFE, STATE OF OSUN, NIGERIA.

Eriwo ya!

We greet you all in the name of Olodumare, Orunmila and all other Orisa. We also extend the greetings of Araba Agbaye (the permanent Chairman of the Council of Araba/Oluwo, the pillar of the International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR)) to you all in this season of the World Ifa Festival. With combine efforts of Board of Ethics and Scripture and the Council of Elders of ICIR, we the members of Publication Committee of the Oke-Itase 2021/2022 Organising Committee set up by the International Council for Ifa Religion are hereby presenting verses of the Ifa of the year recited with inspiration by the priests on the mat in the early hour of Sunday, 6th June, 2021, which stands as the first day of the year in Ifa calendar system. The Odu Ifa that came out for this year is OSE-OKANRAN (OSE on the right, OKANRAN on the left). The Odu came with Ire Aiku (Longevity) and ebo is recommended. Ifa Priests from Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Republic of Togo, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Germany, United States of America, Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina, Panama, Britain, Switzerland, Ghana and Sweden were all there and made their contributions. The verses of OSEO-KANRAN recited with their narratives are below:

1.

Ifa said this is a year of blessings. Many people who are planning traveling abroad will be successful in their plans this year while people who stay at home will also receive blessings. We need to make ebo to always come across fortunes as we go out every day.

There will be a lot of rain especially in the night this year. Human activities especially blocking of waterways will cause flood disaster. Ifa says we should avoid that.

People should refrain from travelling at night for various dangers. Also, when it rains during the day, it is good for us to allow the rain to touch our body, but not to get soaked. Items of ebo include 8 pigeons, honey, gin, soap, money and Ifa leaves. After making the ebo, akose will be done with soap for the person to bath. On this Ifa says:

i.

Items of ebo include eggs, chicken, wooden pegs, money and Ifa leaves. After the ebo, the akose will be buried at the four corners of the community. On this, Ifa says:

We asked Orunmila for the items of Ebo

He said we should use our discretion

Ifa said it is not a matter of rat

We brought fish

Ifa said it is not a matter of fish

Orunmila said we should provide egg

We should provide chicken

We should provide wooden pegs

We should provide Ifa leaves

We have provided them

Eggs do not have rope

Oke-Igeti cannot be climbed by war

4.

To win the wars against our land, ebo is recommended as well as appeasement of Ogun and Ile, the mother earth. Items of ebo include 3 roosters, kola nuts, bitter kola, alligator pepper, snail, tortoise, duck, a goat, pigeon, gin, money, roasted yam, palm wine, beans and palm oil. After the ebo, the dog will be used for Ogun and Ile, the mother earth will be appeased with snail and other necessary things. On this, Ifa says:

5.

We should be careful of strangers. People should not accommodate unknown persons. Landlords/Indigenes are warned to be very vigilant before accepting tenants so that tenants would not bring hardships and dangers to the hosts. They will come with hidden agenda. Ifa says tenants with bad intentions will be exposed and expelled. The landlords must however be security conscious. Items of ebo include, a cutlass, giant rat, palm oil, money and corn meal. On this Ifa says:

Agba orogun la n ri

A kii ri agba iyako

A difa fun Alaka

To n lo ree digba mo Iroko

People do mention senior co-wife

Nobody mentions senior mother-in-law

Ifa revelation to Alaka

Who was going to live with Iroko

6.

We should be our brother’s keeper. When there is problem with anybody, the whole community must be fast at aiding the person or combating the problem so that the problem will not degenerate into affecting the whole community.

Ifa says we should not look away from sickness, death or problem of a single person or community lest it degenerate into mass death. Items of ebo include 3 rosters, palm oil, money and corn meal. On this Ifa says:

When he was sick

It was unable to stand up

It was always feeling cold and warming itself beside fire

When issues erupt, it affects the family head most

When an issue turns abnormal, it will affect even the person who knows nothing about it

Ifa revelation to 164 animals

They were advised to make ebo to avert death for Etu, the antelope so that they would not all die

They refused to make ebo

The arrow then said “Your own has caught you”

Note: The verse above tells story of Etu, the antelope, who was sick. All animals were told to take care of him and made ebo for him. They all refused. When hunters came to kill them, they all ran away except Etu, the antelope, who was too weak to run. It was killed. Then, the hunter flayed it and later used its hide to make arrow which the hunter later used to kill the other animals

7.

People, especially kings, religious leaders and politicians should refrain from fraudulent activities; Ifa said scammers are too many among religious leaders (Ifa/Orisa priests inclusive), Kings and politicians. Many people are too greedy that they want treasures that are meant for the whole community or nation to be theirs alone, many people after receiving their own shares still go extra mile to claim what belong to others while many in the spiritual/religious vocation claim to be what they are not. Ifa is warning people concerned to refrain from this act to escape the wrath of Olodumare and for the community or nation to be better for it. On this, Ifa says:

Ti ose nijo

Ti olokanran layo

A difa fun Olufidan Okoko

Ti won bi loje

To n jeun oloro kiri

Ose’s lot is dance

Okanran’s lot is joy

Cast Ifa for Olufidan okoko

Who was a priest of Egungun by birth

But was greedily eating through Oro deity

8.

People should refrain from adultery for it will be leading to fights and untimely death. We should also refrain from making jest of people. One needs to control one’s tongue lest he/she brings misfortunes to him/herself through utterances. Ifa says some men are so adulterous and bold that they are having secret affairs with the wives of the fellow landlords in the community, even women in the opposite houses. On this, Ifa says:

i.

Seranseran leni ti jewo fun

A difa fun Okere

To n lo ree gba Sesere obirin Oka

Person who denies committing a crime have at least a confidant he/she confesses to

Ifa revelation to Okere, the Squirrel

When going to snatch Sesere, the wife of Oka, the Cobra

Note:

According to the verse, Okere, the Squirrel snatched a wife of Oka, the Cobra. It did not stop at that; it was making jest of Oka, the Cobra, any where the wife snatcher saw the ex-husband. Oka, the Cobra later killed Okere, the squirrel.

ii.

A difa fun onile ikoko

Eyi ti yoo maa yo obinrin okankan fe

Person who denies committing a crime have at least a confidant he/she confesses to

Ifa revelation for the hidden landlord

Who was secretly dating a woman in the opposite house

9.

Married women should also refrain from unnecessary familiarity or play with people so that their husbands will not be suspicious of them. Men should also give necessary respect to married women so that their unhealthy play with them will not send them out of their matrimonial home. Adultery issues will be rampant this year. Both men and women should refrain from any kind of immoral sexual activities to guide against diseases and disgrace. All godchildren must be faithful to their godfathers or godmothers. On this, Ifa says:

Odooro lebe Akuo

Adifa fun Ide ti n se obinrin Orisa

Ikamudu awo oluseka

Eta abiru gbagia awo abe ogan

Awon meteeta ni won petepero

They were the ones who conspired together

And inflicted Ide, the Brass, with unpleasant odour

Ide, the Brass was sent parking from Ifon

Ide, the Brass was expelled from Ojo

Nobody knows what Ide, the Brass did to Orisa

Note:

The verse above is about Ide, the Brass who was a wife of Obatala. One day, Obatala perceived the odour of Asin, Ikamudu and Eta on Ide, his wife’s body. The wife claimed she was just playing with them while Obatala claimed she has committed adultery with them. He sent Ide (the brass) ,the wife away and Osun later accommodated her.

10.

Polygyny is encouraged against going for divorce or having extra marital affairs. Also, any monogamous man who is experiencing blockage of fortunes should marry more wife(s) and this will destroy the blockage. Also, for the couples who are barren, marrying another wife will lead to fertility for the first wife. In other words, the senior wife will also have child once the junior wife has child. Items of ebo include 8 pigeons, gin, banana, egg and money. On this, Ifa says:

It is when we married more wives that we received blessings of all nature

11.

Men should be responsible at home. They should be responsible financially and in other ways. Women are also advised to refrain from working against or starving their husbands. Also, in the polygamous house, co-wives should not gang up or conspire against the husband. Women should be submissive to their husbands. Any woman who has conspired against her husband needs to appease Ifa with a goat. The breast of the goat will be put on the Ikin. On this, Ifa says:

Later, two of them died one after the other, when the third one fell sick, he immediately confessed. She made ebo and appeased Ifa with a goat. They put the breast of the goat on Ifa. She started taking care of her husband and she recovered in a moment.

12.

We should not play with fire. Ebo is needed so that there will not be any kind of inferno. Also, individuals should be careful at home or in the place of work to guide against outbreak of fire. On this, Ifa says:

If the ebo is not made, two of them will be consumed; only one of them will survive the storm. Items of ebo include giant rats and snails with palm oil, money and cutlass. On this, Ifa says:

16.

Some leaders and kings are agents of foreigners who are working towards destruction of Yoruba tradition and culture. Ifa said such kings will be destroyed instead. Ifa said practitioners of Yoruba Indigenous Religion should not be afraid for nobody can destroy the religion. Ifa said this religion will continue to survive and grow and those agents of destruction will surely be put to shame. Those leaders and kings are advised to turn a new leaf for them not to witness the wrath of Olodumare. On this, Ifa says:

17.

We should see everybody as our friends and not enemies. Ifa said, when we are generous to everybody in the community, the enemies will be overpowered. There are enemies who are seriously against Ifa/Orisa priests in our communities. Ifa said all Ifa and Orisa priests and priestesses should be nice and generous in their various communities. They must be generous to everybody. Ifa said, by being generous to people, the enemies will harm themselves. Ifa advises that we should always have kola nuts, wine and other edible items at home for entertainment of visitors. On this, Ifa says:

Eriwoya!!!

We greet you all in the name of Olodumare, Orunmila and all other Orisa. We also extend the greetings of Araba Agbaye Olu-Isese, the Permanent Chairman of the Council of Araba/Oluwo, to you all in this season of the World Ifa Festival. With combine efforts of Board of Ethics and Scripture and the Council of Elders of ICIR, we the members of Publication Committee of the Oke-Itase 2020/2021 Organizing Committee set up by the International Council for Ifa Religion are hereby presenting verses of the Ifa of the year recited with inspiration by the priests on the mat in the early hour of Sunday, 7th June, 2020, which stands as the first day of the year in Ifa calendar system. The Odu Ifa that came out for this year is OGBEOTURA (Ogbe on the right, Otura on the left). The Odu advises us to guide against death and ebo is recommended to avert it. In addition to the priests who were physically present, other Ifa Priests from Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Republic of Togo, Ghana, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Germany, United States of America, Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina, Panama, Britain, Switzerland and Sweden were all allowed to make their contributions. The verses of OGBEOTURA recited with their narratives are below:
1.
Ifa says people should stop oppressing others based on religious affinity, colour or race. It is advised that oppressed group should make ebo to be free. Sacrifice for emancipation from oppression is needed this year. Those who are at the fore front of struggle for freedom must make ebo to fortify and protect themselves. With necessary sacrifice and determination, the victory is assured. The items of ebo include one he-goat, small knife, Ifa leaves, pap, palm oil and money. On this, Ifa says:
Jala Awo Eresun-un
A difa fun Yerepe
O maa gba ara re
Yoo si gba igi oko
Osan pon ooo
Yerepe a ku

Jala Awo Eresun-un
Cast Ifa for Yerepe, the nettle
It would be defending itself
It will also be defending the trees in the farm
It is noon
Yerepe, the nettle is ready to itch

2.
Each person should use snail to appease his/her head. The appeasement should take place at the shrine of Esu or spot where Esu stands. The snail juice put on the head should be allowed to drop on Esu. Ebo should be made to repel any form of calamity and to draw fortunes near. Items of ebo here include thre cocks, three snails, palm oil, kola nuts, pap, money and gin. On this, Ifa says:
Orunmila lo di ewu kee
Ifa mi ewu a peyin da
O ni ki won fi igbin bori
Ki won fi bo orun Esu
Ki ibi le peyin da
Ki ire le de

Orunmila says this is a sign of danger
Ifa says danger will turn back
He said people should appease their heads with snail
And put it on Esu
So that misfortunes turn away
To usher in fortunes.

3.
Ifa says those who are experiencing difficulty of any type should not despair. Also, people who have attempted things without success should not be discouraged. According to this Ifa, success is assured this year. Those whose businesses have not been profitable will profit this year. Parents should not lose hope on their children who have been failures. Ifa says, this year, the incessant failures will give way for great success for the children. Items of ebo include 8 pigeons, honey, gin, pap, palm oil, personal used cloth and money. After making the ebo, the person will take the cloth to the forest, be naked and burn it. After burning that sacrificial cloth, he/she will dress up and go home. On this, Ifa says:
Ori omo dara baba ko mo

He killed a deer but the deer turned to anthill
He was advised to make ebo which he did
Jegbe, choose black horse to ride
Jegbe, choose red horse to ride
Jegbe, choose white horse to ride
He said making necessary sacrifice is always beneficial
Making recommended rituals always profits one
Can’t you see how Ifa Priests proclamations come to pass like dreams
It is amidst fortunes we meet people at the feet of Obarisa

4.
This year, women will triumph in every way. Women are in the best position to rescue the community from disasters. Ifa says all that men cannot accomplish for the community will be achieved by women. Every man should appease the head of his mother to overcome any kind of war be it physical or spiritual. If the mother is alive, it is necessary to also seek to know what she needs and get it for her. If she is late, appeasement is necessary. The items for the appeasement can be asked from Ifa. On this, Ifa says:
Orunmila lo di ibi Jegbe
Ifa mi ka ti bi Jegbe mu Ogbetua ki
Ki eni ma baa ku ibo
Ki eni ma baa ki oregede
Oloori kan go
Onibabatutu ekuru

Orunmila said this is like the issue of Jegbe
Ifa said one should look into the odu of Ogbetura in relation to Jegbe
So that such priest would not miss the divine message
So that such priest would not be relaying irrelevant messages
Corn meal with sour taste
Ground and cooked beans destitute of pepper and palm oil
Are what we use to overpower Oluretemogbo
Oluretemogbo is the name we call Oso
Oluretemogbo is the name we call Aje
Oluretemogbo is the name we call those who backbite

The war that a man fought without success
Which a woman won successfully
Should be referred to as oniyenyetuye war
Ogun’s mother is called Arogbaja
It is Ogun’s mother who always makes Ogun victorious

5.
Ifa says people who have been alleged falsely will be vindicated. People with legal issues need to make ebo. The item of the ebo will include a he-goat, bush fowl (partridge), palm oil, big rat, gin, pap and money. On this, Ifa says:
Kukute kuku awo eba ona
A difa fun Aparo oyeye
To n roko ailerelodun
Mo mu un ra
Mo mu un je
Mo mu un ra laparo n ke

Kukute kuku awo eba ona
Cast Ifa for Aparo (the Partridge)
When going to the farm
I have done this with impunity
I have done this without being punished
I have done this with impunity is the sound of Aparo, the Partridge

6.
Ifa says this year, all the lost fortunes will be regained. Ifa says the lost glories of Yorubaland will be regained if all Oba in Yorubaland perform prescribed ebo and they turn unto and believe in the divine power of Orunmila. The items needed to make ebo include 8 pigeons, honey, gin, pap and money. On this, Ifa says:
Otooto eyi ti n rajo
Boo nile re kan ti ri na
A difa fun Orunmila
Lojo ire re sonu
To n wa a ti ko ri i
Ebo ni won ni ko se
O gbebo nibe o rubo

E wi fun Owarangun, e pe mo ri Ire
Ire to sonu, Ire ti de

An important person travelling
How is the situation of his/her house?
That was the Ifa declaration to Orunmila
When he lost his fortunes
And he was searching for them
He was advised to make ebo
He complied
Tell king Alara, that I have regained my lost glories
Let king Ajero be aware that I have seen the fortunes
Inform king Owarangun, that I have regained my lost glories
The lost glories, they have returned.

7.
For those who are longing for the fruit of the womb, ebo should be made and Ifa appeased. On this, Ifa says:
Orunmila hi itereitere
Hi iteere mi teere Bara mi Agbonniregun
O ni isu se teere, isu n ta
Ato resereserese se teere si ikun omobinrin
Abode e, oyun lo fi ni

Orunmila says in a surprised way
I say in a surprised Bara mi Agbonmiregun
He said the yam in a surprised way produces tuber
Ato, the sperm in a surprised way gets into the woman’s womb
Later, she becomes pregnant
Later, she gives birth to child
People asked what if it is about somebody else
What shall we do?
Orunmila said the person should provide a hen
And use it to appease Ifa
We hear the sound of a hen
It is chicks that are been called

8.
Ifa advises people, especially the religious leaders, the priests and priestesses to increase their responsibility of gathering people. There should be more community temples. This year, people should focus more on doing things in group rather than individual. Also, people should refrain from whatever is capable of splitting members of temples, organisations or groups. On this, Ifa says:
Ogbe teere ogbe ni
Ogbe gogoro ogbe ni
A difa fun Olomo Iworo
Ti won ni ko wa kole Ifa jo
Nje e momo kole Ifa jo
Olomo Iworo!
E momo kole Ifa Ifa jo

The slender Ogbe is Ogbe
The tall Ogbe is also Ogbe
Ifa revelation to Iworo, the priest
Who was given the task of gathering worshippers
Endeavor to gather devotees together
Oh yee priests!
Make sure you gather devotees together

9.
For protection, heads of families need to play the proper roles of protecting the members of the families. Fathers should protect their wives and children. We should endeavor to get initiated into Ifa for protection. Each head of family should make sure the members of the family are initiated. Also, this year, head of the family should desist from praying alone. Any prayer before Ifa should be done together with all members of the family. On this, Ifa says:

Also, for those who are already sick, ebo should be made with a he-goat, big rat, palm oil, pap, an eda specie of rat and money. After the ebo, the rat will be used to touch every part of the body for three days and it will be put on Esu on the third day. On this, Ifa says:
Irin to fin in lorun ope
A difa fun Orunmila
Baba maa fi edan eku paaro ara re
Ewe onisana mi
Kaka ki awo ku
Awo a fi edan eku paaro ara re

Irin to fin in lorun ope
Cast Ifa for Orunmila
He would use a complete rat as a substitute to avert death for himself
Here is onisana leaf
Instead of a priest to die
The priest will use a complete rat as a substitute

10.
This year Ifa said we should be futuristic. Ifa advises us to always get involved in things that will profit us in the future, not to think of only the present gain. We should have plan for our futures. Our concern should be for our old age for individual. Also, for our communities, we should focus on developments in all areas such as education, economy, science and technology. This is needed to be able to meet future demands so that the community will not be lagging behind. Whatever we are doing today, we should be conscious of nemesis and refrain from anything that will have negative effect on us in the future. On this Ifa says:
Emo ni fori gbonini jako
Oya ni ko rumurumu wodo
A difa fun Aaro
A bu fun Ale
Owuro mi ree
Ale ni n toro
Bale mi ba sunwon
Ma dupedupe.

It is emo rat that puts its head forward passing through wet grasses in the bush
It is grass cutter that enters the river awkwardly
Ifa revelation for the Aaro (Morning/Early time)
Ifa revelation for Ale (Evening/Later time)
This is my early time
I am praying for good future
If my future is perfect
I will be grateful

11.
Ifa says people should stop false allegation against one another. In the palaces in Yoruba land, people have lied against Ifa Priests, Araba and Oluwo in particular. They have tarnished the image of priests/priestesses before the kings but Ifa will vindicate them. Also, people who are falsely alleged should make ebo to be vindicated. The items of ebo include the feathers of vulture, ground hornbill, osin bird, Ifa leaves and money. On this, Ifa says:
Gbadiye sin n o gbadiye sin
Ise oun iya ni mu won gbadiye agbako
A difa fun Jegbe

Oba, you must enrich Jegbe
Oba, you have to enrich Jegbe
He brought ela leaves for the king to be rich
Oba, you must enrich Jegbe

12.
Honesty and righteousness should be taken as emblem for all devotees of Orisa. Ifa says people have abandoned the path of truth and they are now trekking the path of falsehood. Orunmila is advising us in this odu to refrain from lying and stick strictly to honesty and faithfulness. Ifa says though there might not be obvious repercussion for telling lies, people should fear the nemesis which will surely catch up with liars eventually. On this Ifa says:
Puropuro kii ku
Enu opuro kii seje
Iro ti won ba pa laaro
Ale ni to tu
A difa fun Iro
A bu fun Otito
Won n raye apaaku
Iro nikan ni n be leyin ti n sebo

The lie told in the morning
Will be exposed at night
Ifa revelation to Iro, the lie
Ifa revelation to Otito, the truth
They were going to the world to live for ever
It was only Iro, the lie who made the necessary ebo
Otito, the truth has gone back to the spiritual realm
It is only iro, the lie that is in the world destroying it

13.
Ifa said, this year, we must make ebo not to record any premature death. Ifa said though enemies do not want many of the elders or leaders to live to witness next year, with recommended ebo, all the leaders and elders will witness next year. Also, we will lose none of the youths. Ebo is needed with a he-goat/three roosters, knife and yam. After making the ebo, we will use the knive to cut the yam vertically. On this, Ifa says:
Olala awo Obe
A difa fun Obe
Obe se odun eyi tan
Ota ni ko ni se omiran

Olala iwo lawo Obe

It was advised to make ebo
It complied
Olala, you are the priest of Obe, the knife
We have witnessed this year
We will surely witness the next year
Olala, you are truly the priest of Obe, the knife

14.
Orunmila has promised his children full protection in the world. Ifa says there are a lot of wars going on here and there. People will be affected but the children of Orunmila will be safe. On this, Ifa says:

Olumoko then in anger drew his cutlass
He killed two hundred people on the right side
He killed two hundred people on the left side
He killed two hundred people at the middle
He said Ifa, I lean unto you
Orunmila, I lean unto you
The protector of the rat is always there for the rat
The protector of the fish is always there for the fish
The protector of the devotee of Ikin is always there for the devotee of Ikin
Ifa, I lean unto you
Orunmila, I lean unto you
Death is the dog
Orunmila, you are the leopard
No dog can snatch child from a leopard

A lot of gin should be sacrifice to Egbe Orun for divine help. Leaders should be generous to the followers for being stingy will make the latter run away from the former when the former need the latter most. People should not be self-centered for this act will lead to nothing but unpopularity and failure. On this, Ifa says:

Ifa says we should not look down on any person. We should think more of quality and not the quantity in our endeavours this year. The divine strength of individuals should be our focus not our human strength. Ifa says we should all ask for blessings from Orunmila and not be overconfident. Ifa says the blessed people should not think it is because of their wisdom or perfection because Olodumare is the one who gives blessings. On this, Ifa says:

Akoko ni olori gbena gbena eye ninu oko
Ire ni amungun kokoro
A difa fun Mo-le-kogun awo ile Alara
A difa fun Mo-le-kogbon awo oke Ijero
A difa fun Mo-le-kaadota awo Epa tooro mofe

It is in joyous condition we meet at the feet of the king of Orisa.

#1 The change/blessing you can expect is in learning how to receive. You don’t have to fight, or work so hard in order to receive what sustains you. You are taken care of. Your spirit guides, ori, and ancestors are gifting you with all you need at this time. No worries, all is well. Express gratitude to receive even more abundance. You may also be in a position to donate to others. What a blessing!

#2 The change/blessing you can expect is in your resourcefulness. You will gain increased confidence as you realize that you are built for this. You will become more innovative. You will create a new system, product or offering. Your work ethic and innovation are highlighted at this time. Your singular focus is on creation. Have fun!

#3 The change/blessing you can expect is connected to victory. You will be victorious throughout this time. If you’ve been having a battle of wills with anyone you will see victory. If there is a trickster around you, you will outwit them. This may also be a time when you’ll attract attention and admiration. A sense of self satisfaction comes from learning a hard lesson about yourself and your surroundings. Accept the lesson and celebrate the fact that you are better as a result. Celebrate your growth!
